Remaining yarn weight determines the remaining proportion of the original skein when the yarn is uniform. Weigh what is left, take the weight and length from the ball band, and this calculator returns the yards or metres remaining, the percentage left and how much you have used. It answers how much yarn is in a partial skein — not how much a project needs.
How the Remaining Yarn Formula Works
A skein of yarn is the same yarn all the way along. That single fact is what makes the calculation possible: if the yarn is uniform, the fraction of the weight that remains equals the fraction of the length that remains.
Remaining length = remaining weight ÷ original weight × original length.
Two further figures fall out of the same proportion. Used length = original length − remaining length, and remaining percentage = remaining weight ÷ original weight × 100. The calculator returns all three.
The condition attached to the formula matters as much as the formula. It compares yarn against its own label, so it only holds while the leftover came from the product that label describes. Two different yarns, or a yarn that is deliberately uneven along its length, break the assumption rather than merely blunting it.
What Numbers You Need From the Yarn Label
You need exactly two figures from the band: the full skein weight and the full skein length. Most bands print both, often in two unit systems at once — 100 g / 3.5 oz and 220 yd / 201 m.
These are the manufacturer's figures for a full skein as sold. They are not measurements of the specific ball in your hand, and no manufacturer publishes a per-skein tolerance, so this page attaches no number to that uncertainty — it simply says the result is an estimate. How to Weigh Leftover Yarn
Use a kitchen scale rather than a postal or bathroom scale. A typical kitchen scale reads to 1 g, which is fine for this. A bathroom scale reads in steps far too coarse to be useful on a 40 g ball.
Take the band, the tie and any cone or core off first. Anything left on the scale beside the yarn is counted as yarn, and pushes the estimate up. Where a core cannot be removed — a cake wound on a plastic former, for instance — weigh an identical empty core and subtract it.
Weigh dry yarn at room conditions. Damp yarn is heavier than the same yarn dry, and reads as more length than you have.
Zero the scale with nothing on it, or tare a bowl if the ball will not sit still.
Worked Example
A 100 g skein labelled 220 yd. What is left weighs 37 g. The proportion is 37 ÷ 100 = 0.37, so the remaining length is 0.37 × 220 = 81.40 yd, which is about 74 m. That is 37% remaining, and 138.60 yd used.

The last row is the multiple-skein case. Enter how many skeins the leftovers came from and both the original weight and the original length scale by that number, so 250 g of leftovers from three 100 g skeins is 250 ÷ 300 × 660 = 550 yd.
Yards vs Meters and Grams vs Ounces
There is a useful asymmetry here that most tools obscure. The weight unit cancels. It appears on the top and bottom of the same fraction, so 100 g and 37 g give exactly the same answer as 3.53 oz and 1.31 oz. You never need to convert a weight — you only need both weights in the same unit.
The length unit does not cancel. It passes straight through from the label to the answer. So a band reading “100 g / 220 yd” needs no conversion at all, even though it mixes metric weight with imperial length — which is exactly how most bands are printed. The calculator shows the other unit alongside the result for convenience, using the international yard of 0.9144 m exactly.
How Accurate Is a Remaining-Yarn Estimate?
The honest answer is that it is a proportion, and it inherits the uncertainty of everything it is built from. One of those sources can be quantified exactly, and the calculator does so.
Scale resolution. A scale that displays whole grams tells you the weight is within half a gram of the reading. On a 100 g / 220 yd skein, a 37 g reading means the true weight is between 36.5 and 37.5 g, which is 80.30 to 82.50 yd — a band of 2.20 yd. The rest cannot be quantified honestly, so this page does not try. There is no published tolerance for how far a skein's actual weight or length may sit from its printed figures, and no published allowance for moisture. Naming those effects without inventing numbers for them is the accurate thing to do.

Common Mistakes
Weighing the core with the yarn. The single most common cause of an estimate that reads high. A plastic cake former or a cardboard cone is easily several grams.
Using the wrong skein's label. The proportion compares a yarn against its own product specification. A 50 g band cannot describe leftovers from a 100 g skein.
Mixing weights in different units. The unit cancels only if both weights use the same one. Grams against ounces produces a number roughly 28 times wrong.
Treating the result as measured length. It is an estimate from a proportion, not a measurement of the yarn. For anything where running out would be costly, leave margin.
Applying it to thick-and-thin or slub yarn. The formula assumes even yarn. A deliberately uneven yarn breaks that assumption.
What Can You Do With the Result?
The figure is one half of a comparison. To find out whether it is enough, you need the other half: what your project requires.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out how much yarn is left in a partial skein?
Weigh what is left, then scale the label's length by the proportion of the weight that remains. Remaining length = remaining weight ÷ original weight × original length. A 100 g skein labelled 220 yd with 37 g left gives 37 ÷ 100 × 220 = 81.4 yd, so about 81 yd or 74 m remain, which is 37% of the skein.
Do I need to use grams, or will ounces work?
Either, as long as both weights use the same unit. The weight unit cancels in the ratio, so 100 g and 37 g give exactly the same answer as 3.53 oz and 1.31 oz. The length unit does not cancel — it passes through from the label, which is why a ball band reading “100 g / 220 yd” needs no conversion at all.
How accurate is a remaining yarn estimate?
It is a proportion, so it is as good as the numbers going into it. Three things limit it: your scale's resolution, the fact that the label's weight and length are nominal figures for a full skein rather than measurements of yours, and anything weighed along with the yarn such as a tie, a ball band or a cone. If you enter your scale's resolution the calculator returns a range instead of a single number, which is the honest form of the answer. No accuracy percentage is claimed, because none is published.
What if I have more than one skein's worth of leftovers?
Enter how many skeins the leftovers came from. The calculator scales both the original weight and the original length by that number, so 250 g left from three 100 g skeins of 220 yd each works out as 250 ÷ 300 × 660 = 550 yd. This only holds if every skein is the same product; mixed dye lots of the same yarn are fine for this sum, mixed yarns are not.
Why does my estimate seem too high?
Usually because something other than yarn is on the scale. A cardboard cone, a plastic core, the ball band and any tie all add weight, and the calculator reads that extra as yarn. Remove what you can and weigh again. Damp yarn also weighs more than dry yarn.
Can I use this to check whether I have enough yarn for a project?
It gives you one half of that comparison. Once you know the length remaining, compare it with what your pattern states, or work out the requirement from your gauge and dimensions. The calculator will not suggest projects from a yardage figure, because what a given length makes depends on gauge, stitch and size.
