How to Measure Wraps Per Inch (WPI) for Unknown Yarn
Wraps per inch (WPI) measures the number of adjacent wraps of yarn that fit within one inch. Measuring it takes a pencil, a ruler and about two minutes, and it is the fastest way to narrow down an unlabelled yarn. The method matters more than the number: wrapping tension alone can move a reading by two wraps, which is enough to change the answer.
Wrap the yarn snugly around a pencil for a few inches, strands touching with no gaps and no overlap. Lay a ruler alongside and count the wraps inside one inch. Repeat in three places and average.
What Is WPI?
Wraps per inch counts how many strands of a yarn lie side by side within one inch. A thinner yarn fits more strands into the inch, so a higher WPI means a thinner yarn. The measurement describes the strand itself, before any hook touches it.
Its purpose is identification. When a yarn has no ball band — a de-stashed cone, an inherited bag, a wound cake with the label long gone — WPI gets you from “no idea” to a short list of plausible weight categories. It does not replace the label, and it does not settle what the yarn will do in a pattern.
What You Need to Measure WPI
Something with a consistent circumference to wrap around. The Craft Yarn Council names a pencil. A dowel, a knitting needle or a purpose-made WPI tool all work. What matters is that the cross-section does not change along its length, because a corner or a taper makes the strands sit unevenly.
This is worth stating plainly because the most common shortcut is to wrap directly onto a ruler. A ruler is rectangular: the yarn bends around two corners and compresses at the edges, so the spacing varies along the inch. It is quicker, and it is slightly less repeatable. The ruler's job is to measure, not to be wrapped.
One thing that does not matter is how thick the object is. WPI counts wraps along the length of whatever you wrap, so each wrap takes up one yarn-thickness of that length regardless of the circumference underneath. A pencil and a broom handle give the same count. Only go thinner with caution: on something very narrow, a thick yarn cannot lie flat and the strands splay.

How to Measure Wraps Per Inch Step by Step
Wrap the yarn without stretching it
Unwind a length and let it relax before you start. Wrap it around the pencil for a few inches — more than the single inch you will measure, so you have room to take readings in several places. Keep the yarn snug. Snug means each strand touches its neighbours; it does not mean pulling. The Council's instruction is explicit that pulling too tightly skews the measurement.
Keep each wrap beside the next
The strands should lie side by side with no gaps between them and none riding over another. Both faults change the count in a predictable direction: gaps read low, overlaps read high. Run a fingernail along the wraps to settle them, and if one has crossed over another, unwind and start again rather than nudging it.
Measure one inch
Lay the ruler alongside the wrapped section and count the strands that fall inside a single inch. Count what is in the inch, not the number of wraps you made. If a strand sits on the boundary line, decide once whether you are including it and apply that consistently to every reading.
For a finer result on a thick yarn, count over two inches and halve the figure — the arithmetic is simply wraps divided by inches, and it removes some of the rounding error that comes from counting a small number of thick strands.
Repeat the measurement
Take at least three readings in different places along the wrapped section, exactly as you would move around a gauge swatch, and average them. The spread between your readings is as informative as the average. If the highest and lowest differ by two wraps or more, the variation is coming from your wrapping rather than from the yarn, and the average is not yet worth trusting.
How to Read Your WPI Result
Compare the average against the Craft Yarn Council's published ranges. Three outcomes are possible, and it is worth knowing which one you have.
Your reading may fall in exactly one range, which is the clearest case the table offers. It may fall in several, which is the most common outcome in the middle of the scale. Or it may fall in none — the published ranges leave a gap between Jumbo (1–4) and Super Bulky (5–6), so a reading of 4.5 belongs to neither.

Why WPI Ranges Overlap
Yarn thickness is continuous. Weight categories are discrete. Something has to give, and the Craft Yarn Council chose to publish honest ranges that share values rather than invent hard boundaries no yarn respects.
The consequence is that a single reading usually matches more than one category. Twelve wraps per inch sits inside Medium (9–12), Light (11–15) and Fine (12–18) simultaneously. That is not a failed measurement; it is the table working as designed. A tool that returns one confident category from one reading is concealing the overlap, not resolving it.
Why Your WPI Measurement May Differ
Two people measuring the same yarn will often get different numbers, and the Craft Yarn Council says so directly: “WPI is subjective, and results will vary depending on how tightly the yarn is wrapped.” Here is what that looks like in practice.
Ten wraps matches Medium alone. Twelve matches Medium, Light and Fine. Fourteen matches Light, Fine and Super Fine — and shares nothing with the first reading. Same yarn, three tensions, and the categories no longer even overlap. The counts above illustrate the direction and size of the error rather than describing a particular yarn.
Fibre and construction contribute too. A soft, lofty single compresses under wrapping and reads thinner than its label; a firm, tightly plied yarn resists and reads thicker. These are craft observations rather than published figures — the Council does not quantify them.

WPI vs Yarn Weight
WPI is a measurement; yarn weight is a classification. You measure the first and look up the second. The step between them is the published range table, and because those ranges overlap, the step is one-to-many rather than one-to-one.
So “this yarn is 12 WPI” is a fact about your measurement. “This yarn is worsted” is a conclusion, and at 12 WPI it is one of three available conclusions. The yarn weight conversion guide covers what each category means once you have narrowed it down.
WPI vs Crochet Gauge
This is the distinction that decides how much weight to put on a WPI reading. WPI describes the yarn as a material. Gauge describes what you and your hook make from it, which is why gauge is the number patterns are written around.

How to Identify Yarn When the Label Is Missing
WPI is one input among several. Run through these in order and the picture usually resolves.
Measure WPI first, because it is quick and narrows the field to two or three categories. Then weigh what you have on a kitchen scale; combined with a known length it gives you yards per 100 g, which separates a dense cotton from a lofty wool sitting at the same WPI. Burn-test or feel-test the fibre if it matters for the project — drape, warmth and washing behaviour follow the fibre, not the thickness. Then swatch with the hook the shortlist suggests.

Common WPI Mistakes
Wrapping on the ruler. Convenient, but the corners and edges space the strands unevenly. Wrap a pencil and measure with the ruler.
Pulling the yarn tight. The single largest source of error, and it always runs the same way: tight reads high, so the yarn looks finer than it is.
Taking one reading. One number tells you nothing about its own reliability.
Measuring straight off the ball. Yarn under tension is stretched yarn. Let it relax.
Measuring the halo instead of the core. On a haloed yarn the fluff holds the strands apart and the count reads low.
Treating the result as an identification. WPI produces a shortlist, not a name.

FAQ
How tightly should I wrap the yarn?
Snug, not tight. The Craft Yarn Council's instruction is that the yarn “should be snug, and the wraps should lay side by side without any over lapping, or large gaps between strands”, and that you should not pull the yarn too tightly because it skews the measurement. Snug means each strand touches its neighbours without compressing them. If you are unsure of your tension, the Council suggests practising on a yarn whose weight you already know.
Can WPI identify a yarn exactly?
No. WPI estimates the thickness of the strand, and the published ranges overlap, so most readings match more than one weight category. A reading of 12 wraps per inch matches Medium, Light and Fine at once. WPI narrows an unknown yarn to two or three plausible categories; a gauge swatch settles which one behaves the way your pattern needs.
Why do WPI charts disagree with each other?
Because most published charts are not the same chart. The Craft Yarn Council publishes one set of ranges; individual designers, spinners and tool makers publish their own, often with narrower bands or different boundaries. This guide uses the Council's ranges throughout and says so. If a chart does not name its source, you cannot tell which convention it follows.
Can I measure fuzzy or textured yarn?
You can measure it, but the reading is less trustworthy. A mohair halo, a bouclé loop or a thick-and-thin single has no single thickness to count, so the strands will not sit evenly however carefully you wrap. Wrap the core of a haloed yarn rather than the fluff, take more readings than usual, and treat the spread between them as the real answer. The Craft Yarn Council publishes no guidance for these constructions, so this is craft practice rather than a standard.
Should I stretch elastic yarn before measuring?
No. Let it relax first. Yarn pulled straight off a ball is under tension and measures thinner than it is, and elastic content exaggerates that. Unwind a length, let it sit until it stops recoiling, then wrap it without tension.
Do I still need a gauge swatch after measuring WPI?
Yes. WPI measures the yarn; gauge measures the fabric your hook makes from it. Two people can measure the same yarn at the same WPI and still produce different fabric, because gauge includes hook size, stitch pattern and the tension of the hand holding the hook. WPI tells you where to start; the swatch tells you what you will get.
How many readings should I take?
At least three, in different places along the wrapped section — the Council's instruction is to “measure a few places as you would a gauge swatch”. Average them. If your highest and lowest readings differ by two wraps or more, the variation is in your wrapping rather than in the yarn, so wrap again before trusting the average.
