Crochet Hat Size Chart: Head Circumference, Crown Diameter and Height
A crochet hat is sized from one measurement and two calculations. Measure the head, take about 10% off for the stretch, and divide by π for the crown. Everything else on this page is detail on those three steps — including a chart for when the head is not available to measure.
Hat circumference = head circumference − about 10%. Crown diameter = hat circumference ÷ π. A 22 in head takes a 19.8 in hat with a 6.30 in crown. Measure the head if you possibly can; the chart below is for when you cannot.

How to measure a head
One real measurement beats every chart on the internet, and it takes about ten seconds. Run the tape level around the head, roughly a finger's width above the eyebrows at the front, passing over the widest part of the skull at the back.
Keep it snug rather than tight — a finger should slide under the tape. Measure over the hair the hat will actually sit on, because a lot of hair changes the number more than most people expect.

Three different kinds of number sit in that table. The head circumference column is an external fact, published by the Craft Yarn Council. The hat circumference column applies a 10% negative ease, which is a practitioner convention with no published source. The crown diameter column is exact geometry, circumference divided by π. They are labelled here because they carry very different weights.
Two things about the published chart are worth noticing. It skips 12 to 14 in entirely — preemie stops at 12, baby starts at 14 — so a small newborn falls in a gap, and this page does not invent a row to fill it. And the adult categories overlap by two full inches, which is the chart telling you that heads do not sort neatly by category.
Why a measurement beats an age
Age charts answer a narrower question than they appear to: not “what size is this person’s head” but “what size is a typical head at this age”. Those are different, and the published ranges say so. A tween range of 20–22 in and a woman range of 21–23 in overlap almost completely.
Use the chart when you are making a gift for someone who is not in the room, working ahead for a charity box, or writing a pattern that has to fit a range. When the head is available, measure it and ignore the chart.
Negative ease: why the hat is smaller than the head
A hat stays on because the fabric is stretched. Make it the same size as the head and it will ride up and off; make it smaller and the stretch grips. That difference is negative ease.
How much a fabric will take depends on what it is made of. A ribbed or textured stitch in wool has real recovery and can take 15% happily. A dense stitch in cotton has very little, and 5% may be all it will tolerate before the hat simply stops stretching back — the fibre guide covers which fibres spring back and which do not.
Crown diameter is the part that is exact
A top-down hat begins as a flat circle worked in increase rounds. The question is when to stop increasing, and that has one answer.
Stop increasing when the circle measures that diameter across, then work straight down without further increases. Keep increasing past it and you are making a beret. Stop short and the hat will not reach the head, no matter how many straight rounds follow.
Finished height
Height is the loosest figure on this page, because no body publishes one and the right answer depends on how the hat is meant to sit. As working figures: about 8–9 in from crown to brim for an adult beanie that covers the ears, 6–7 in for a child, and 5–6 in for a baby.
Treat those as a starting point and check against the head. Height is the most forgiving dimension in the whole project — it is the one thing you can still adjust when the hat is nearly finished, by adding rounds or by folding a deeper brim.

Top-down is the more forgiving of the two for a first hat, because you can try it on from very early and simply stop when the depth is right. Bottom-up commits you to the circumference at the foundation, which is why the foundation chain calculator matters more there — particularly if the brim has a stitch repeat to respect.
Where gauge comes in
Everything above is in inches. Gauge is what turns inches into stitches, and it is the step most likely to go wrong, because hat fabric is often worked at a different tension from a flat swatch.
For a 19.8 in hat at 14 sts per 4 in — 3.5 sts per inch — you need 69 stitches around. Get the gauge wrong by a single stitch per inch and that becomes 59 or 79, which is a hat two sizes out. Swatch in the round if the hat is worked in the round: many people crochet a different tension in spirals than in rows, and the gauge swatch calculator will tell you how far off you are.
Worked examples
An adult beanie. Head measures 22 in. At 10% negative ease the hat is 19.8 in around, and the crown diameter is 19.8 ÷ π = 6.30 in. At 3.5 sts per inch that is 69 stitches; working top-down at 4 rounds per inch, the crown reaches full width after roughly 13 increase rounds. Then work straight to about 8 in total.
A toddler hat, no head available. The chart gives 16–18 in, so the hat is 14.4–16.2 in and the crown 4.58–5.16 in. Take the middle, and size up rather than down — a slightly large hat gets grown into, a small one gets refused.
A cotton hat for a 22 in head. Same head, different fibre. Cotton has little recovery, so 10% ease will stretch and stay stretched. At 5% the hat is 20.9 in with a 6.65 in crown — slightly roomier, and it will hold that shape rather than bagging out by the end of the day.
Where hat sizing goes wrong
Making the hat the size of the head. Without negative ease there is nothing holding it on. This is the most common single error.
Using the age chart when the head is available. The ranges overlap by two inches. A measurement does not.
Measuring over a hairstyle the hat will flatten, or without one it will not. Measure the head as it will be when the hat is worn.
Swatching flat for a hat worked in the round. Tension frequently differs between the two, and a hat has no seam to absorb the error.
Increasing past the crown diameter “to be safe”. It does not make the hat safer, it makes it a beret.

How tall should a crochet hat be?
