Crochet Sock & Slipper Size Calculator

Measure the foot, decide how snug you want the sock, and this works out the finished size to aim at and the stitch count your gauge gives. A published size band can start you off if the feet are not to hand, but an actual measurement is always the better input — two people in the same shoe size can have quite differently shaped feet.

Size a Sock or Slipper

This is craft sizing: measurements, ease and gauge. It makes no medical or orthopaedic claim of any kind.

1. Units, project and gauge
All measurements use this unit.
This changes the wording of the notes, not the arithmetic. You choose the ease either way.
In the stitch you will use for the sock.
Usually 4 in or 10 cm.
Add it and you also get a round count for the length.
The span you measured the rounds across.
2. The foot
Measuring is better. A band is a starting point when the foot is not available.
Around the widest part of the foot.
Heel to longest toe.
3. Ease and stitch pattern
Negative for a sock smaller than the foot. Starts at zero because no standard figure exists — it depends on how far your fabric stretches.
Usually near zero for a sock; a slipper may want a little more.
If the stitch pattern works in groups.
The “+ 2” in a multiple of 4 + 2.

What to Measure

Two numbers drive everything here: the circumference around the widest part of the foot, and the length from heel to longest toe. An ankle measurement is optional and only matters if the cuff is close-fitting.

Why Measuring Beats a Shoe Size

A shoe size is a category, not a measurement. It is built around length, and it says very little about how broad or deep a foot is — which is exactly what a sock has to accommodate. Two people in the same size can want socks several stitches apart.

That is why the reference bands here are the second option rather than the first. They are genuinely useful when you are making a gift and cannot get at the feet, and they are the Craft Yarn Council's own published figures, but they describe a band rather than a person.

Choosing the Ease

The circumference ease starts at zero, and that is deliberate: no standards body publishes a figure for how much smaller a sock should be, so this tool does not invent one.

What can be said is the reasoning. A sock worked to exactly the foot measurement has nothing holding it up, so many patterns work them slightly smaller and let the fabric stretch to fit. How much smaller depends on how far your particular fabric stretches and whether it springs back — a crocheted fabric with little give will not tolerate what a stretchy one will. Work a swatch, stretch it, and let that decide.

A slipper is a different problem: it is worn loose, often over a sock, and usually wants zero or a little positive ease rather than negative. The tool does not assume either way.

From a Measurement to a Stitch Count

Worked through: an 8 in foot with -0.25 in of ease gives a 7.75 in finished circumference; at 8 stitches per inch that is 62 stitches around.

What the Stitch Pattern Costs You

If the sock is worked in a pattern that repeats over a group, only certain counts are available — and the tool shows what each one actually measures, not just the count.

Take that 62-stitch result with a stitch pattern working in groups of 4. The counts either side are 60 and 64, which at this gauge come out at 7.50 in and 8.00 in around. That is the real choice: not two numbers, but two socks a quarter of an inch apart in circumference.

What This Calculator Does Not Do

It is craft sizing, not a fitting. It makes no medical, orthopaedic, circulatory or therapeutic claim, and nothing here should be used as though it were clinical advice. If a foot needs specialist footwear, that is a question for a professional, not a stitch calculator.

It also stops at the circumference and the length. It does not work out a heel turn, a toe decrease or a gusset: those are construction, and they differ enough between toe-up, cuff-down and slipper-base methods that a single formula would be wrong for most of them. What this gives you is the number those constructions start from.

And the reference bands are bands. If you use one, treat the result as a starting point and check it against a real foot before you work the whole sock.

The reference bands are its Foot Size Charts, keyed to US shoe sizes as the source keys them, checked on 2026-08-14; they are offered as a starting point and the tool never selects one for you. Those charts publish each value in both inches and centimetres, and one cell disagrees with itself: the Woman 4–6½ sock height is given as 6½ in and 6.5 cm, which are not the same measurement. That cell is excluded from anything calculated here. Everything else is arithmetic on the measurements you enter: a measurement plus the ease you choose gives a target, and a target times your gauge gives a stitch count.
