Crochet Sleeve Taper Calculator

A sleeve narrows from the upper arm to the cuff, and the question is always the same: how many stitches come off, and on which rows. Give this tool your two circumferences, the length you are shaping over and your gauge, and it returns the stitch counts at each end, the number of decrease events, and a row-by-row schedule with the decreases spread evenly rather than bunched.

Plan a Sleeve Taper

Measure the arm rather than looking up a size, and measure your gauge in the stitch you will actually use for the sleeve.

What the Calculator Works Out

Four steps, and each one needs something the step before it did not.

starting stitches = upper arm circumference × stitch gauge
ending stitches = cuff circumference × stitch gauge
stitches to remove = starting − ending
decrease events = stitches to remove ÷ stitches removed per event

Why It Asks How Many Stitches One Decrease Removes

This is the input people are surprised by, and it is the one that matters most.

A sleeve worked flat that decreases at both edges of a row removes two stitches on that row. A sleeve worked in the round with a single decrease removes one. Other constructions pair them differently again.

Take a sleeve going from 56 stitches to 36: that is 20 stitches to lose. At two per event it needs 10 events. At one per event it needs 20. Assuming the wrong one gives a schedule that is out by a factor of two, so the tool asks instead of guessing.

Why You Get a Schedule, Not a Rate

“Decrease every 6.7 rows” is not something anyone can work. What you need is a list of rows.

Ten of them are picked out with a heavier outline and a filled bar, marking the rows where a decrease event falls: rows 4, 7, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, 33, 36. The marked rows are identified by both outline and fill rather than by colour alone. Together the events take the sleeve from 56 stitches to 36, removing 2 stitches each. Changing how many stitches one event removes changes the whole schedule.

The events are placed so the gaps between them are as even as they can be, and so that neither the first nor the last falls at the very edge of the zone. That leaves a plain run at the underarm and another before the cuff, which is what you generally want: shaping right at a seam or right before a cuff edge is awkward to work and shows.

Shaping Over Part of the Sleeve

Many sleeves do not taper the whole way. They run straight from the underarm for a while and then narrow over the lower portion. The length to shape over field is the tapered part only, not the whole sleeve.

Shortening the zone while keeping the same stitch reduction packs the same number of events into fewer rows, which makes a steeper taper. If the events no longer fit, the tool says so rather than producing a schedule you cannot work.

When the Stitch Pattern Constrains the Count

If the sleeve is worked in a stitch pattern that repeats over a group, only certain counts are valid. Enter the multiple and the tool reports the nearest counts either side of where the taper lands, so you can decide which to aim for before you start rather than discovering the problem at the cuff.

What This Calculator Does Not Do

It plans the taper of the sleeve tube. It does not shape a sleeve cap, work out a raglan line, or set the armhole — those depend on construction in ways a single taper cannot express.

It also takes your two circumferences as finished measurements, ease already included. Deciding that ease is a separate step: the ease calculator handles it, and the measurement guide covers where to measure an upper arm in the first place.

And it says nothing about whether a given taper rate looks right. A gradual taper and a steep one over the same stitches are both arithmetically correct; which suits the garment is a design decision.

Every figure here is arithmetic on the measurements and gauge you enter: a circumference times a stitch density gives a stitch count, the difference between two counts is what must be removed, and a length times a row density gives the rows available to remove it in. No decrease rate is assumed and none is recommended — how many stitches one decrease event removes is asked because it varies with construction, and where the schedule is placed follows from the numbers rather than from a convention. Stitch counts are whole numbers, so a reduction that whole events cannot reach exactly is reported with what it actually lands on rather than being rounded away silently. Nothing here has been tested against a finished sleeve and no such claim is made.
