Crochet Border Stitch Calculator
Edge length and border stitch density together determine a pickup count. This calculator works that out for each edge separately — the top and bottom against your stitch gauge, the sides against your row gauge — then spreads the stitches evenly across the insertion points each edge actually offers, and rounds the total to a count your border repeat will accept.
How Many Stitches Does Your Crochet Border Need?
A border needs as many stitches as its own gauge asks for over the length of the edge. That is the whole of the first calculation: edge length × border stitches per unit = pickup target.
What makes borders harder than that is the second question. The edge only offers so many places to put a stitch, and that number comes from the fabric you already made, not from the border. Reconciling a target with the available positions is the work, and it is different on each pair of edges.

How Border Pickup Math Works
Three steps, all division and multiplication.
Density. Each gauge is divided by the span it was measured over, so 16 stitches over 4 in is 4 border stitches per inch. Target. Edge length multiplied by border density gives the stitches that edge wants. Positions. Edge length multiplied by the relevant fabric density gives the insertion points available — stitch gauge on the top and bottom, row gauge on the sides.
Nothing here assumes a ratio. This page contains no rule of the form “one stitch per row” or “three stitches every four rows”, because whether either is right depends entirely on how your border stitch width compares with your row height. If the two gauges you enter happen to make one stitch per row end correct, the calculator will say so; it will not start from there.
Why Side Edges Need Different Math
A crocheted rectangle has two kinds of edge. The top and bottom run along the stitch direction and present the tops of stitches. The sides are row ends — the turning edge of each row.
Because stitch gauge and row gauge are separate measurements, the two kinds of edge offer different numbers of insertion points per inch. Take a fabric at 14 stitches and 18 rows per 4 in with a border at 16 stitches per 4 in: the top edge needs 1.143 border stitches per available stitch top, while the sides need 0.889 per row end. Those two figures differ by more than a quarter. One rule applied to both would visibly distort one of them.
When your stitch and row gauges happen to be equal, the two ratios coincide and a single rule does work. That is the exception rather than the default, and the calculator tells you which case you are in.
How to Fit a Border Stitch Repeat
A decorative border built from repeats will not accept an arbitrary total. If the pattern works in groups of six with two extra, the count must be n × 6 + 2.
The calculator reports both counts and how far each sits from your target, rather than rounding for you. Which to take is a judgement the arithmetic cannot make: a slightly low count runs the border a little tight, a slightly high one a little loose, and which matters depends on the piece.

How to Distribute Pickups Evenly
Once you have a target and a number of positions, the remaining question is where the extras go.
Divide the target by the positions to get a whole number and a remainder, then spread the remainder across the edge rather than grouping it. For 54 stitches across 40 row ends: 14 row ends take two stitches and 26 take one, with the doubles falling about every 2.86 row ends. That sums to exactly 54.
Spreading matters because clustering the extras gathers the fabric in one place, which shows as a lump rather than as an evenly eased edge. The calculator produces the sequence for each edge using an even-distribution algorithm rather than a rule of thumb, and its properties — the counts summing exactly, every position taking either the low or the high number, the extras spread rather than bunched — are checked across tens of thousands of combinations rather than spot-checked.
Notice what this example is not. The familiar shorthand of three stitches every four rows would give 30 stitches across these 40 row ends, not 54. Shorthands encode one particular gauge relationship; they are not general.
Why Crochet Borders Ripple or Pull In
Count is one thing that causes these, and it is the one this calculator addresses. It is not the only one, and the table says so.

Count is worth checking first because it is the cheapest to check and the easiest to correct. If your count matches the target and the edge still misbehaves, look at border stitch height, hook size, and what you are working into — common crochet mistakes covers the rest.
Worked Border Examples
A square piece with matching gauges. 20 × 20 in at 16 stitches and 16 rows per 4 in, border at 16 per 4 in. Every edge wants 80 stitches and every edge offers 80 positions, so it is one stitch into each — the case where the shorthand happens to be right. Total 320 around the straight edges.
A blanket with unequal gauges. 40 × 50 in at 14 stitches and 18 rows per 4 in, border at 16 per 4 in. Top and bottom want 160 each over 140 stitch tops; the sides want 200 each over 225 row ends. Total 720. The top edges need more stitches than positions while the sides need fewer — opposite adjustments on the same piece.
The same blanket with a 6 + 2 repeat. The 720 total becomes 716 or 722, four below or two above. With a 3-stitch corner allowance entered, the corners add 12 and are reported separately, because a corner allowance folded into the total would hide the edge figures.
Common Border Calculation Mistakes
Using one ratio for all four edges. The commonest, and the reason a blanket border can sit flat along the top and ripple down the side.
Adopting a shorthand from a different gauge. Three stitches every four rows is right for one particular relationship between row height and stitch width, not in general.
Counting the border against the body gauge. The pickup target comes from the border stitch, which is often a different stitch from the body.
Folding corners into the edge count. Corners are shaping, not pickup, and mixing them hides the number you need.
Rounding to the repeat before checking the edges. Fit the repeat to the total once the four edges are settled.
Treating the perimeter as one number. The perimeter is a length, and a single pickup figure derived from it hides the fact that half of it is measured against the stitch gauge and half against the row gauge. Add the edges up after each has been worked out, not before.
Measuring the piece unblocked. Every length here is a finished measurement; block first if the piece will be blocked.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many stitches should I put down the side of crochet?
As many as your border gauge asks for over that length — which is rarely the same as the number of rows. Multiply the side edge length by your border stitches per inch or per centimetre. A 50 in side at 4 border stitches per inch wants 200 stitches, and if your row gauge puts 225 row ends along that edge you are working fewer than one stitch per row end, not one per row.
Should I crochet one border stitch into every row?
Only if the arithmetic happens to work out that way. One stitch per row end is right when your border stitch is as wide as your body row is tall, and wrong otherwise. Double crochet rows are usually taller than a single crochet is wide, so a single crochet border along them normally needs more than one stitch per row end. Calculate from the two gauges rather than adopting a ratio.

Count first, because counting is the cheapest thing to check.
Why is my crochet border pulling inward?
Too few stitches along the edge is one possible cause. So is working into a tight edge stitch, changing to a smaller hook for the border, or a border pattern that draws in by nature. Compare your actual count against the target above before assuming tension is at fault.
How do I make a decorative border repeat fit?
Round the pickup total to a count the repeat accepts. A repeat written as a multiple of 6 + 2 accepts 50 and 56 but nothing between them, so a target of 53 has to move one way or the other. The calculator returns both counts and how far each is from your target, so you choose whether the border runs slightly tight or slightly loose.
How many stitches should go around a blanket?
There is no fixed number — it follows the blanket's own measurements and your border gauge. Measure the finished width and height, multiply each by your border stitches per inch or per centimetre, and double both because every dimension has two edges. A 40 × 50 in blanket at 4 border stitches per inch wants 160 pickup stitches along the top, 160 along the bottom and 200 down each side: 720 around the straight edges, before any corner allowance. How many stitches go in each corner?
That depends on the border stitch and how sharp you want the corner, and no standard sets it. This calculator keeps corners as a separate figure you enter rather than assuming one, because a corner allowance baked into the total would hide the number you most need to see — the pickup count along the straight edges.
